Joy's Half-Marathon at the Beach withTeam in Training
I recently made a commitment that will last for the next four months, and will end on August 31st, in Virginia Beach, VA. I will be competing in a half-marathon (13.1 miles of running) as a member of Team in Training.
Team in Training, an endurance training program, provides coaching and training assistance to runners all over the country, who have pledged to raise money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. In fact, since 1988 Team In Training athletes have raised more the $430 million for the cause. I have taken a pledge to raise $3,500 to help make a difference in the lives of individuals with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and Hodgkin lymphoma. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's commitments include research patient service programs, community service programs, professional education and advocacy. Sadly, every five minutes someone learns that they have one of these diseases-nearly 300 people a day. Every nine minutes another child or adult is expected to die from leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, or myeloma. I will be running in honor of Morgan, a very special eight-year-old girl who was diagnosed in January of 2002, with AML (acute myelogenous leukemia) and who is currently in treatment. I met Morgan and her father at the Kick-Off Meeting and she is an incredible girl. She is the middle of three children; she has a younger sister named Taylor and an older sister named Amber. She keeps in shape by playing soccer and enjoys singing and dancing. Her family is moving into a new house and she is so excited because she gets to have a dolphin bedroom. She loves dolphins. Morgan has two dogs, Zoe and Shadow. Zoe holds a special place in Morgan's heart as she got her when she was in the hospital. Zoe has really taken to Morgan and follows her all over the place. I know Morgan will be an inspiration for me and others on our team during the next four months. By now you are probably wondering how you can help. I won't ask you to join me on my long training runs (unless you're volunteering), but you can help Morgan and me by making a donation to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Your 100% tax-deductible donation will help fund research and patients services in our area. Click the Pledge link to see how you can make a donation. I appreciate all your generosity. |
